There's nothing more satisfying than making beautiful sewing projects or knitted garments for little ones.
And there are very few sewing patterns which are cuter than these gorgeous mouse slippers – perfect to keep little feet warm in the cooler months.
The ears are decorated with patterned fabric – use whatever style of fabric you like to suit your child's wardrobe.
This pattern requires a sewing machine, so is best for intermediate sewers. But if you've mastered the basic sewing techniques, this project is a great (and very cute!) way to make the most of your new skills.
1. Trace the templates on page 152 onto scrap paper and cut out. Pin the slipper top and outer ear patterns to the felt, and cut out one top and two outer ears for each slipper.
2. Place the paper slipper top on paper, place your foot on it, and then draw around the back of your foot to make a slipper base pattern the correct size. Cut out the pattern, then pin it to the felt and cut out two slipper soles.
3. Pin the paper inner ear pattern to the patterned fabric and cut out four inner ear shapes. Pin the inner ears onto the felt ears, matching the straight edges. Tack them in place, then take out the pins. Pin two ears onto one of the slipper tops, pointing outwards at a jaunty angle, and tack them in place. Take out the pins and machine stitch the ears in place, as close to the base of the ear as you can. Take out the tacking stitches. Repeat on the other ears and slipper top.
4. Using the needle and white thread, stitch two black button eyes onto each slipper top, starting and finishing with a few small stitches on the back of the slipper top to secure.
5. Cut the ribbon into four 6cm-long pieces. Lay two on each slipper top in a cross to make the whiskers. Sew a few small stitches where they cross and then stitch a pink button over the top of the cross to make the nose. Again, finish with a few small stitches on the wrong side.
6. Pin the soles of the slippers onto the smooth side of the non-slip fabric and cut out. Tack, removing the pins as you go, and then machine stitch all the way around both, about 5mm from the outer edge. Remove the tacking stitches.
7. Bend the slipper tops as you pin and tack them to the soles, removing the pins as you go. Put the zipper foot on your sewing machine and carefully machine stitch the tops to the soles. Take out the tacking stitches.
